The Nature of Evil
Not a power equal to the Most High. An absence that imitates one.

The Basilica's doctrine on the nature of evil is unsparing. Evil is not a second power balanced against the Most High. It is not a creator. It cannot make. It can only refuse.
Evil is vow withdrawn. It is the name unspoken. It is the cold space inside a soul where the Most High's word was meant to live and has been driven out. The Great Fall is the first and largest instance — an Archangel withdrawing the vow that had defined his own existence — and every smaller refusal since has followed the same shape.
What the world calls power, when it is dark, is only the speed at which an absence consumes what surrounds it.
