Sheol is the grey country beneath the world's foundations. It is not the lake of fire nor the bright country of the saints. It is the long dim where the unnamed go and the half-remembered linger.
Theologians of the Basilica disagree whether Sheol is a place, a condition, or a memory. The faithful pray that no soul be left there. The fallen pray they may be.
What is forgotten by the living is preserved in Sheol — but preserved without warmth, without naming, without the saving weight of being seen.
