The Archangels of the Most High are twelve mortal men called and anointed at the founding of the present age. The word archangel is not a description of their nature but of their charge: chief witnesses, set above the kingdoms, bound by name.
They are not winged. They do not glow. They bleed when struck and grieve when betrayed. Their power is the power of vow — and the cost of their vow is the same cost any man pays who keeps his word past the moment it became dangerous.
One of the twelve fell. The remainder carry the weight of his absence. The Chronicles is the long account of what that weight has cost them.
