The Chains of the Library are the consecrated iron links by which the deepest volumes of the Undercroft are held to their lecterns. They were forged in Beralt and blessed in the Basilica, and the Chronicles assert without explanation that they breathe.
Whether the chains move by the books, or the books by the chains, no chronicler of the Basilica has ever recorded with certainty. The discipline of the Undercroft is to leave the question alone and to refuse to visit the Library unaccompanied.
