It holds what cannot be set down anywhere else.

The Shelf is the single stone ledge in the deepest chamber of the Undercroft upon which relics that will not rest elsewhere are laid. Its origin is not recorded. The Basilica's chroniclers note only that the Shelf was already in the Undercroft when the Undercroft was first measured.
What is set upon the Shelf does not move. What is set upon the Shelf is not consulted. The Hidden Priests inspect it once a year and report, in every recorded instance, that nothing has changed.
